INTRODUCTION:

About PCOS (Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome): It is an endocrinopathy that usually affects the women of reproductive age (i.e women who are in the age to bear a child). It can be seen in women in the age of 16 to 50 years.

Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome is now a day, more commonly seen than it was seen a decade ago. There are various reasons that contribute to the development of Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome in women and young girls.

SIGN AND SYMPTOMS:

The women suffering with polycystic ovarian syndrome experience various symptoms. The most common amongst them are menstrual irregularities, infertility, acne on face, hair loss, etc.

Women also gain excess amount of weight during Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome. They exceed far away from the average BMI.

In women, suffering with Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome weight gain is the most common physical sign observed. In rare cases, the women tend to lose weight or the women with lean body mass also develop Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome.

Women with lower body weight or lean body mass develop poly cystic ovarian syndrome is called as Lean Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome.

In Lean Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome, the symptoms are almost same except for the weight gain. People with lean Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome do not gain weight.

DIAGNOSIS:

Lean Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome is diagnosed based on the physical appearance and ultrasound scan of the abdomen or pelvis. Physical examination can be done for acne and hirsutism (excess hair growth on facial skin).

Ultrasound scan reveals the presence of cysts in the ovary. The size and number of the cysts in the ovary can be studied through ultrasound scan of the patient.

TREATMENT OF LEAN POLY CYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME:

There are Several treatment options available to treat Lean Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome.

Allopathic physicians prescribe various medicines to treat symptomatically. To enhance ovulation and regularize menstrual cycle hormonal therapy is given to the patients that include progesterone or combination therapy.

In Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome, advising patients for weight loss is the first line of treatment. While in lean Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome, weight management is not the first line of treatment option.

Though the patients suffering with Lean Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome must be advised to have a check on their weight. Fresh fruits and organic vegetables should be included in the diet.

Exercising is the key to keep your body fit and healthy. It enhances the metabolic system and improves your health.

Insulin resistance is most commonly seen. To manage high blood sugar levels in the body, hypo-glycemic agents are prescribed.

To control acne vulgaris of either grade I to Grade IV, benzoyl peroxides, retinoids and antibodies like doxycyline are prescribed to the patients.

To manage hirsutism (excess facial hair), various methods can be used, like shaving off the excess facial hair. Other methods include electrolysis or laser therapy.

To treat fertility in patients with Lean Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome, pharmacological drug like clomiphene is prescribed. Other method to enhance fertility is IVF (In-Vitro Fertilization).
